Authors to Watch ---- Michele Sims: Paranormal Romantic Suspense Author

On our new Authors to Watch series, our first interview is with Michele Sims, multi-award-winning author of The Moore Family Saga.

Tell us something about Michele Sims, the writer.
How did you start writing paranormal romantic suspense novels?

I attended the RWA National convention in San Diego in 2016 and enrolled in one of the creative writing courses. They gave us the challenge of creating a bigger than life character as the lead in a romance story. I went back to my hotel room, eager to take part in the project. I had written most of the first manuscript in the Moore Family Saga in 2015, a contemporary romance where Miles’s uncle, Vincent Moore, was the hero. As I delved into Miles’s character, the story The Fire God Tour, a paranormal romantic suspense, was created.

Can you share something personal about Michele, the woman?
What moves you? What is your driving force?

Michele Sims is my pen name. My government name is Deanna Michele Simmons McNeil, MD. Prior to publishing my first book, I worked as a psychiatrist for thirty years. I was a Naval Officer for twelve years. I’m moved by helping people to realize their authentic selves. We spend so much of our lives trying to understand others when the challenge is to understand ourselves, human beings who are dynamic and capable of evolving. My driving force is to do something different every year. I like that each day can be a new beginning.

What was your debut novel? What made you decide to write?

My debut novel was Seed on Fire, a contemporary romantic suspense novel. I loved reading romance books. I also like the challenge of doing something outside of my comfort zone, so I penned my own novel.

Your latest novel, Face the Fire, will be released soon.
What started you on the Moore Family Saga?

I love the complexities of family dynamics. I’ve worked with many families for decades. We are all shaped by our family interactions, so books about the love of family, family ties and family loyalties are very interesting to me.

Of all your books, which one is your favorite and why?

My books are like my children. My favorite depends on which day or which time you ask. To be honest, I don’t have a favorite. I’m grateful the characters chose to speak through me.

What can readers expect when they read your books?

The readers can expect a central romance where family dynamics play a significant role in the thrill ride the characters take. There will be twists and turns but in the end there will be a happily ever after or at least a happy for now.

As an Indie author, how do you find the whole publishing process?

I published my first book in 2018, so I’m still relatively new to the process. If I had to choose one word, I would say, unregulated.

Do you have any tips or advice for fellow Indie Authors?

Read as much as you can about the craft of writing while educating yourself about the business of publishing. Join writers and readers’ groups. Listen to valid sources with a proven track record and success in publishing.

What's next? Do you have another book in the pipeline?

I have several works in the pipeline, including a Christmas series for 2022.
